Mark Wignall | Chaos, cruelty, fear!

The first time around in 2016, the shocker came upon us like a global cardiac arrest. Was it that America was not yet ready for a woman president, or could it be that the idiocracy was in the early phase of its development? In 2024, Trump’s win...

Newcastle United’s struggles at home continued as Fulham came from behind to secure a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park. Despite taking the lead in the first half, the Magpies couldn’t hold onto their advantage as Fulham staged a brilliant second-half comeback to take all three points. It was another disappointing result for Eddie Howe’s side, who have now suffered four home defeats this season. Murphy Puts Newcastle Ahead, But Fulham Fight Back Newcastle’s early energy had fans hopeful, but as the game went on, the Magpies’ grip on the match loosened. The hosts started fast, but it quickly became clear that Fulham were dominating possession. Despite their struggles, Newcastle did manage to take the lead just before halftime, thanks to Jacob Murphy’s well-taken goal. It came from a quick break, with Anthony Gordon providing the assist after a powerful run down the left. Murphy’s goal was a moment of confidence, especially considering his solid recent form. But while Newcastle was ahead, they didn’t look entirely in control, and the feeling was that Fulham could turn things around after the break. Fulham Capitalize on Newcastle’s Woes Sure enough, Fulham didn’t waste any time after halftime. They came out strong, and Newcastle’s lead was short-lived. Just after the hour mark, Raul Jimenez’s shot was deflected off Murphy and into the net, leveling the score. Fulham had the momentum, and it felt like it was only a matter of time before they would take the lead. Newcastle had their moments too—Alexander Isak hit the crossbar, and Joe Willock missed a golden opportunity from close range—but they never seemed like they would truly regain control of the match. It was clear that Fulham were the more dangerous side. Fulham’s Winning Goal With just eight minutes left, Fulham completed their comeback. Andreas Pereira delivered a brilliant free-kick from the left side, and Rodrigo Muniz, who had come on as a substitute, made the perfect run to flick the ball home unmarked. Newcastle couldn’t muster a response, and the game ended with Fulham celebrating their well-deserved win. This defeat will be a tough one for Newcastle to swallow, especially with bigger challenges ahead, including their upcoming match against Arsenal. It’s clear they’ll need to be far more solid if they’re to stand a chance against the Gunners.
